Usambara Mountains
The Usambara Mountains are a mountain range located in northeastern Tanzania, forming part of the Eastern Arc Mountains. They are celebrated for their breathtaking green landscapes, temperate climate, and rich biodiversity. This region is a favoured spot for ecotourism, hiking, birdwatching, and discovering unique flora and fauna. The Usambara Mountains, situated in tropical East Africa, represent the easternmost section of the Eastern Arc Mountains. Stretching approximately 90 kilometres (56 miles) in length and about half that in width, they are located within the Lushoto District of the Tanga Region.

The West Usambaras feature steep slopes, oriented from southeast to northwest, rising from the coastal lowlands and central plateau at elevations of around 400–800 meters. The term ‘Usambara’ may have several meanings, one of which is ‘The place of the Shambaa,’ referring to the homeland of the Shambaa people. The Usambara Mountains are renowned for their biodiversity, temperate climate, and lush green scenery, often dubbed the ‘Galápagos of Africa’ due to the numerous endemic species found there.

They are divided into two primary sub-ranges: the West Usambaras, which are centered around the town of Lushoto, and the East Usambaras, located nearer to the coast and home to the Amani Nature Reserve.
