Camping in East Africa’s national parks and game reserves is an extraordinary experience, but it comes with responsibilities. Being in unfenced wilderness areas means sharing your environment with wild animals, and following proper safety protocols is essential to ensuring a safe and enjoyable trip for everyone. Careful Campsite Selection

Always opt for established, designated campsites within national parks wherever possible, as these sites have been assessed for safety and are regularly monitored by park rangers. If you are selecting your own campsite on a self-drive safari, choose a clean, flat area that is visibly free from animal trails, game paths, or watering points. Avoid pitching your tent beneath large, old trees with potentially unstable or dead branches that could fall during the night.

Secure All Food, Drinks & Scented Items

Keeping a clean and odour-free campsite is the single most important thing you can do to avoid attracting wildlife to your sleeping area. Store all food, beverages, snacks, and scented items—including toiletries, sunscreen, and insect repellent—in airtight, sealed containers kept inside your vehicle or in designated food storage facilities provided at the campsite. Ensure all waste and food scraps are disposed of properly in sealed bags and placed in the designated waste points away from tents.

Never Store Food Inside Your Tent

This is a non-negotiable rule. Refrain from keeping any food, cooking equipment with food residue, or scented products of any kind inside your tent at any time. Even small amounts of food can attract animals ranging from small rodents to hyenas and elephants. Maintaining a food-free tent interior at all times significantly reduces the risk of unwanted nocturnal wildlife visitors.

Stay Alert After Dark

Always carry a bright headlamp whenever you move around the campsite after sunset. Avoid unnecessary nighttime excursions outside your tent or vehicle where possible. If you need to use the bathroom facilities at night, make noise as you walk to alert nearby animals of your presence, and always shine your torch around the area before you proceed. Wild animals are most active at night, and your vigilance during these hours is critical.

Keep Your Tent Sealed at All Times

Ensure that your tent remains fully zipped closed at all times, especially during the night and during peak wildlife activity periods such as dawn and dusk. This prevents insects—including mosquitoes, scorpions, and spiders—as well as curious small animals from entering your sleeping space. Follow Your Guide’s Instructions at All Times

Exercise Extreme Caution Near Water Sources

East Africa’s rivers, lakes, and water holes are home to some of the continent’s most dangerous wildlife, including Nile crocodiles and hippos. Never swim in rivers or lakes within or near national parks and game reserves. Even shallow-looking water crossings or scenic riverbanks can harbor significant dangers. Maintain a safe viewing distance from any water source, particularly at dusk and dawn when hippos and crocodiles are most active.
