Katavi National Park stands out as one of Tanzania’s most untouched and wild natural wonders. Katavi National Park offers a rare glimpse into the country’s unspoiled landscapes and abundant wildlife. Sprawling grasslands stretch as far as the eye can see, home to vast herds of buffalo and antelope that together create a breathtaking panorama of natural beauty. Surrounding these open plains are enchanting forests and serene lakes, which create a thriving ecosystem for diverse species, including hippos and crocodiles, while also attracting an array of birdlife that enhances the park’s ecological vibrancy.
Established in 1974, this remarkable reserve is located in Tanzania's Katavi Region in the southwestern part of the country, nestled just north of the Rukwa Rift, a section of the geologically significant Western Rift Valley. Encompassing an impressive expanse of around 4,471 square kilometres, Katavi holds the distinction of being the third-largest national park in Tanzania.
Among Katavi's many extraordinary natural spectacles, its thriving hippo population is undoubtedly one of the most iconic. The park is famed for hosting some of the largest gatherings of hippos across the African continent. As the dry season progresses and water sources gradually shrink, visitors stand an even greater chance of observing these fascinating creatures in closer proximity, providing unforgettable experiences that highlight the park's unique appeal.
- Ikuu Public Campsite provides visitors with various amenities such as restrooms, shower facilities, a kitchen, a dining area, and easy access to water..
- KataviWildlife Camp is situated amidst the lush Miombo woodlands and the breathtaking golden grasslands of Kitasunga Plain, offering a scenic retreat.
- Riverside Camp enjoys a convenient location in Sitalike village, just north of the park and only a quick 5-minute drive from the park headquarters.
Visitors on self-drive trips to Katavi National Park, passionate about spotting wildlife, will find the period from June to October—aligning with the dry season in Western Tanzania—to be the most favourable time to visit. This period, particularly in early June and July, offers unparalleled opportunities to witness enormous herds of buffalo grazing across the rich floodplains of Chada and Katisunga.
Departures to Katavi National Park are always from Dar es Salaam through Mikumi and Mbeya. This is a two-day drive which required some breaks at some points. We will rent you a 4×4 Land Cruiser for Katavi Safaris. You can choose to camp at various campsites with a rooftop tent and save on the trip. Because it’s one of the least-visited parks in Tanzania, you cannot guarantee accommodation.
Katavi National Park boasts a rich diversity of wildlife, featuring species such as wildebeest, giraffes, elephants, zebras, African buffaloes, lions, leopards, and cheetahs. Crocodiles and hippos are often seen along the shores of the Katuma River.
