Best Time for a Self-Drive Road Trip in Tanzania (from Arusha or Dar es Salaam)
Dry season (late June to October) is generally the best window. Roads are firmer and easier to navigate, especially the unpaved stretches into parks like Serengeti, Tarangire, or Ruaha. Wildlife is also easier to spot since animals cluster around rivers and waterholes, and if you’re heading toward the Serengeti/Mara area, this period overlaps with the wildebeest migration river crossings (roughly July–September).
January to February is a secondary good option — a short dry spell between the rains, quieter on the roads, and a great time to catch the calving season in the southern Serengeti/Ndutu area if your route goes that way. Avoid March to May (long rains) — many unpaved roads, especially in Tarangire, Serengeti, and Ruaha, become slippery or impassable, and self-drive in a 2WD becomes risky. A 4×4 is recommended even in dry season, but it’s essential if you’re traveling near the rains.
A few route-specific notes:
- From Arusha: this is the natural gateway to the northern circuit (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Manyara), so dry season timing matters most here.
- From Dar es Salaam: routes south toward Mikumi, Udzungwa, or Ruaha are less rain-sensitive overall, but the same dry-season logic applies for road conditions and wildlife viewing.
